Ready to turn climate activism into action? Interested in learning how to effectively finance SDG 13: Climate Action?  Join the climate finance expert with over 40 years of experience in high-level climate diplomacy, Professor Howard Bamsey of Australian National University, for a dynamic discussion of international cooperation, youth engagement, and solutions!

Within the past year alone, impacts of climate change have visibly exacerbated existing challenges to sustainable development in societies around the world.  Increased risks due to flooding, droughts, wildfires, and infectious diseases must be considered in implementing local solutions to advance the SDGs. Both adaptation and mitigation measures will require strong partnerships in financing innovative solutions.  As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to threaten economic, political, and social security all around the world, how can communities prepare for the compounded risks of climate change? How can policies of climate action reflect this resilience as a global effort through collective national contributions?

The SDSN Youth network is delighted to host Professor Howard Bamsey, former Executive Director of the UN Green Climate Fund, current chair of the Global Water Partnership, and former Special Envoy on Climate Change for Australia, to share his insight from over 40 years of civil, diplomatic, and ambassadorial service for Australia. Professor Bamsey will share the triumphs and trials of climate diplomacy.

What are effective strategies for financing the transition to low-carbon energy and land use efforts for the private sector and multilateral development banks?

Professor Howard Bamsey is a world-renowned leader in climate policy, championing pragmatic climate action as Australia’s Special Envoy on Climate Change and engaging in key negotiations for the UNFCCC. His experience in leading the “Dialogue on Long-term Cooperative Action on Climate Change by Enhancing Implementation of the Convention'', among other notable positions, provides Professor Bamsey with a unique perspective on facilitating multi-stakeholder, tangible action.

How can we equip students with a cooperation-based framework to strengthen their confidence and capacity in engaging with various stakeholders for climate action?

The former Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund, Professor Bamsey now serves on the board of the Climate Policy Initiative. We invite Professor Bamsey to reflect on strategies for strengthening domestic capacity for climate action in creative financing solutions. Passionate and eager youth can learn from Professor Bamsey’s personal experiences as they seek to transition from activism to attaining realistic solutions.

Are countries effectively implementing domestic climate action to attain their NDCs? Beyond SDG 13’s targets and indicators, what further strategic steps can facilitate realistic policy creation and enforcement?

He has lent his policy expertise as Special Envoy for Climate Change, Senior Advisor on Sustainable Development to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, and as Special Advisor to AusAID. He currently serves as honorary professor at the Australian National University School of Regulation and Global Governance.

Join Professor Bamsey for a brief presentation on climate finance, followed by a moderated discussion on youth engagement, conflict resolution in diplomacy, and effective measures for climate action.

The event will feature a presentation by Professor Howard Bamsey, followed by a discussion with Theresa and a moderated Q&A. A live audience will also be given a chance to ask their own questions.
